From Fields to Frontlines: Navigating Food Security in Conflict Zones

November 15, 2023 @ 2:00 pm

As a gentle reminder, the UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies’ Panel Discussion, titled “From Fields to Frontlines: Navigating Food Security in Conflict Zones”, is just two days away. If you haven’t registered yet, this is the ideal time to ensure your participation in this enlightening event. I’ll be emailing all materials from our speakers to everyone who registered post-panel. These resources will provide a comprehensive and ready-to-use lesson plan on global food security.

From the article by Timothy Snyder: “Imagine a global food system where Ukraine is the main hub. In normal times, Ukraine can feed four hundred million people, and usually the World Food Programme of the UN depends on Ukraine. Ukrainian exports feed some of the most sensitive parts of the Middle East and Africa. A significant part of the instability in these regions is related to food shortages. Russia destroyed a large dam to ruin Ukrainian agricultural lands. And it extensively mined Ukrainian farms. Russia targets its missiles at ports and grain storage facilities, and also claims the pirate right to stop shipping in the Black Sea with its fleet.”
