Biography

With a master’s degree in Russian Linguistics and a Ph.D. ABD from Belarusian State University, I have spent many years studying and researching the Russian language and its associated cultures. Furthermore, as a native Persian speaker, I have a unique insight into the complex interplay between the Persian and Russian languages. This has shaped me into a reliable and accomplished literary translator, having translated Russian books into Persian, including Svetlana Alexievich’s Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster. In addition to my translation work, I have published numerous academic papers in Russian and Belarusian magazines, international magazines, and articles in the Iranian Press. My research has focused on the lexico-semantic field of emotion in Russian translations of Khayyam’s poetry. As such, I have developed a deep understanding of the intricacies of the Russian language and its rich literary traditions.

As someone who spent years living abroad, I understand the experience of being outside of the dominant culture. My cultural competency has been developed through a lifetime of international experiences, including growing up in Iran and living in Belarus and the United States before working with the Russian flagship program at UNC for two years. These experiences have taught me the importance of valuing and appreciating different cultures and perspectives. My background as a Persian speaker

has given me a unique perspective on the similarities and differences between the Russian and Persian languages. I strive to use this knowledge to help my students better understand the Russian language’s structure and nuances while encouraging them to appreciate and learn from different cultures and perspectives.
