The film series continues with «Палата №6» (Ward №6).
Karen Shakhnazarov's film is loosely based on Anton Chekhov's novella of the same name from 1892. The movie is set in contemporary Russia, on the premises of the Nikolo-Poshekhonsky monastery (now an asylum) near Moscow.
"'Ward No. 6' has a disorienting sense of time. Although set in 2007-8, the movie features Chekhov’s dialogue, conjuring a slower-paced late-19th-century life with endless room for philosophic rumination. The modern touches do not obscure Chekhov’s profound compassion for the human condition and his distrust in science and technology to end human suffering and to erase our awareness of the imminence of death and extinction of all memory." - New York Times review
Introduction and discussion with the professor at the UNC GSLL and the Anton Chekhov specialist, Dr. Radislav Lapushin.
