Polish Week: “Yellow Ticket” Film Screening with Live Score

March 27, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Yellow Ticket“ (original: Der Gelbe Schein, 1918) is a German UFA-production directed by Victor Janson and Eugen Illés about a young Polish-Jewish woman, who escapes her poor native village in Poland to study medicine in St Petersburg. Forced by antisemitic laws and customs, she leads a double life as a prositute and university student. The film was made at the end of World War I, and includes rare footage of the former Jewish quarter of Warsaw and its residents. It stars the young Pola Negri, who would later become a legendary femme fatale and icon of Hollywood’s silent era.

The showing of this silent film will be accompanied by a live performance of the original score by Alicia Svigals (klezmer violinist) and Donald Sosin (pianist). The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Karen Auerbach (History, UNC), Allen Anderson (Music, UNC), Beth Holmgren (Duke University), and Alicia Svigals. The panel will be moderated by Magda Stawkowski (CSEEES Fellow).

This event is free, but space is limited and RSVP is required.
