AICGS is recruiting sixteen participants (eight from Germany, eight from the U.S.) per year who have been active, professionally or on a voluntary basis, in the service of communities that have experienced societal division and/or marginalization in the United States and Germany to participate in its project “Social Divisions and Questions of Identity in Germany and the United States.” Participants ideally will be involved in regional politics, schools and education, civil society organizations, the media, or social and economic efforts that benefit their communities.
Selected participants are required to take part and actively engage in all scheduled events. The third program year will take place in Glendale, Arizona, from September 19-24, 2022, and Memmingen, Bavaria, from March 19-24, 2023. Travel, accommodation, and most meals will be provided for the participants by AICGS.
Application
Selection is based on a competitive application process. Up to a maximum of eight applicants from the U.S. and eight from Germany will be invited to participate in the program.
Individuals’ qualifications and willingness to actively engage in and commit to all aspects of the program will be the primary criteria for evaluation by AICGS program staff. Participants will be expected to invest some of their time throughout the project year to work on refining the topical content, prepare for the next meeting (virtual and in-person), and contribute to the articles, podcast, and story map. The participants should be active in their communities (community/public service, local politics/media, education, or other); be familiar with the issues the program seeks to address, either through personal experience or their work; and have an interest in strengthening networks within and across communities in the U.S. and Germany and in supporting the transatlantic relationship. AICGS in particular encourages applications from individuals who are currently living and working in the states of Arizona and Bavaria but accepts applications from across both countries. The program is designed to bring together individuals who represent the increasing diversity in both Germany and the United States and to provide opportunities for younger people to engage (although there is no age limit to apply).
Applications are due by March 31, 2022. Prospective participants must provide the following application materials in one PDF document (in English only):
- a statement (1-2 pages) describing in detail the applicant’s interest in and qualification for the program; applicants should include at least one topic of relevance to the project and name at least one organization they believe could make a contribution to the goals of the project
- a current CV
- one letter of recommendation (professional or academic)
