Congratulations to Prof. Aleksandra Prica, whose promotion to the rank of associate professor with tenure took effect on January 1, 2022, and to Dr. Clayton Koelb, Guy B. Johnson Distinguished Professor of German, English, and Comparative Literature, whose retirement from the faculty likewise became official on January 1, 2022. Prof. Koelb served as chair of the Department of Germanic Languages (1997–2011) and the combined Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures (2011–2016), for which he deserves all our thanks. He spearheaded creation of the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, which was launched in 2009. (See “The language studies program that united Carolina and Duke,” by Amanda Wicks, University Communications, February 8, 2021, link). GSLL looks forward to Prof. Koelb’s continued participation in the life of the department in his new position as professor emeritus.
