Ria Stambaugh – Frank Borchardt Essay Award

Each spring, the Carolina – Duke Graduate Program in German studies presents an award in recognition of outstanding scholarly achievement. The Ria Stambaugh – Frank Borchardt Essay Award, presented for best writing proficiency review essays, is given in honor of two revered professors, Ria Stambaugh at UNC, and Frank Borchardt at Duke, who were highly esteemed by their colleagues and students. In May 2016, this prize was awarded to Jeffery Alden Hertel for his essay submitted during the 2015-2016 academic year.
