Research is just one of GSLL’s many pillars
Faculty and students alike conduct research in the Department of Germanic & Slavic Languages & Literatures on countless fronts spanning the pre-modern to the contemporary, from Western Europe to Russia: culture and cultural history, film and media studies, literature and literary history, linguistics, as well as philosophy and theory.
Once home to the book series “University of North Carolina Studies in the Germanic Languages and Literatures,” which published from 1949 to 2004 127 volumes of research on German language, literature, and culture with the University of North Carolina Press, GSLL is now home for other publishing ventures: the editor of the Slavic & East European Journal is based in GSLL; and graduate students and faculty are also involved in andererseits: Yearbook of Transatlantic German Studies. GSLL is the new editorial home of the Slavic and East European Journal.

Now a single Ph.D.-granting department, GSLL has a long roster of former graduate students whose masters theses and doctoral dissertations have made important contributions to the humanities.
Carolina-Duke Works in Progress Lecture Series
As part of the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, GSLL co-hosts with its partners at Duke University a monthly lecture series featuring faculty and graduate student research in progress.
