Rick Warner (English and Comparative Literature, UNC Chapel Hill)
"Filming a Miracle: Contemplative Strategies from Dreyer to Reygada
About this talk:
Warner’s talk addresses the category of “contemplative cinema” through an investigation of two exemplary cases, Carl-Theodor Dreyer’s Ordet (1955) and Carlos Reygadas’s Silent Light (2007). The miraculous events in these strangely hypnotic films are shown to prolong a sense of mystery, to break down traditional dramatic hierarchies (concerning the human figure and the environment), to refuse any absolute separation of the physical and the metaphysical, and to provoke a keenly perceptive consideration of cinema’s cosmographic possibilities.
